WONDEROPOLIS PROJECTS: From "Try it Out".
- Have you ever played a musical instrument? What about making one? Using items you have around your home, experiment with making an instrument. You might make a drum, a flute, a stringed instrument—or a new invention all your own! Find some ideas here or here. Be sure to share your photos of your instrument with us and explain how it works. You may also record yourself.
- Writing and singing aren’t the only ways to be creative. With an adult’s help, play some of Lena Horne’s music. You can find some examples here. Use paint or any materials you may have, and let her music inspire you! Share what you create with family and friends.
- Pie charts are used to show parts of a whole. Survey 10 people you know and ask about their favorite kind of pie. Then create a pie chart to show your data. You can learn about pie charts and create a graph in the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Kids’ Zone.
- Writing acrostic poems with your name or your friends’ names can be fun but challenging. An acrostic starts with a word—like your name —written vertically. The letters in that word begin each line in the poem. That can be tricky, but if you use a thesaurus it can help you think of words. Write a poem and share it with us and a family member.
