DESCRIPTION: Course HUM162: World Music: Begins with an introduction to the great variety of musical styles from around the world. Examines representative music of the non-Western world, with an emphasis on its function within the culture of which it is a part. No previous musical experience is required. Emphasizes an understanding of basic musical terminology and the development of improved listening skills. Course also includes a Survey of American contributions to the world’s musical culture, with an emphasis on understanding musical terminology and developing the ability to listen intelligently. No previous musical experience is required. Musical examples will include 19th century classical compositions and subsequent gospel, blues, jazz, Hip Hop and popular music, presented within a general overview of American culture of the time.
